Put away your passports – there’s a bona fide Mexican restaurant right here in the city of Windsor!

Palenque Fresh Mexican Cuisine is a wonderful family business offering true authentic Mexican cuisine located at 4736 Wyandotte Street near Pillette. Its name comes from the Mayan ruins of Chiapas. It’s a modest place with bright colours, simple artwork on the walls, and soft lighting creating a cozy atmosphere.

One of the owners has years of culinary experience as a past chef at a well known restaurant in Windsor before opening their own place. They take great pride in offering fresh and local ingredients, purchasing their produce and meat from the City market and other local vendors.

Margarita on Flag of MexicoWindsor Girls Growl™ visited Palenque on December 19, 2012. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the hostess, and the server was friendly and efficient throughout the night and took the time to explain some of the items on the menu when asked for assistance.

With Christmas only a week away and feeling the festive mood we opted to start with margaritas to celebrate (okay, who am I kidding – Christmas or not we would have ordered them!).

Tortilla Chips with Guacamole -Photographed on Hasselblad H1-22mb CameraThe margaritas were delicious, using real ingredients (not a pre–made mix), and we shared several appetizers including guacamole which was very fresh with just the right amount of cilantro. The Queso fundido con Chorizo (otherwise known as flaming cheese) was very yummy and gooey – just the way I like it! – and was served with toasted pita chips.

My main dish, Pollo Asado, was delicious. The chicken was moist and tender and topped with fresh pico de gallo.

They offer a wide selection on the menu with reasonable prices and good sized portions. I was anticipating the churros for dessert, but unfortunately they were out of them – but that’s okay as it just gives us an excuse to go back!

Julie B.‘s Overall Rating
Except for a few minor things, we all seemed to really like our individual dishes and the service was great. We would definitely put Palenque on our list of restaurants to try again and again and again. GpawRating-WholeGpawRating-WholeGpawRating-WholeGpawRating-WholeGpawRating-Half

Comments from fellow Growlers
Salsa Bar at a Mexican CantinaLaurel R. said: “I ordered chicken enchiladas, and they were delicious – very flavourful and fresh. I especially appreciated how the server took time to go through the menu with me (a non-cilantro lover!) to suggest items that included little or no cilantro. Being able to make an informed choice about what to order helped me to thoroughly enjoy the selection I made. I will definitely revisit Palenque!”

Lisa M. said: “The chicken was delicious but the rice and refried beans were over salted. The guacamole and flan were super yummy. Overall I loved the dinner.”

Lisa L. said: “I had a pineapple margarita, and it was a refreshing twist on the conventional lime or berry ones. I had the beef fajitas this time and they were delicious – the steak was really tasty. I had been there before and had a chicken enchilada and one of the spices on the chicken didn’t appeal to me – I think I would try the beef next time.”

I definitely missed the opportunity to sample the churros – I’ll have to go back for a second try!

I actually have special memories of this particular Growl, not only for the delicious food and wonderful company… but also because it was during dinner at Palenque that Lisa L. planted the idea in my mind of starting a Windsor Girls Growl blog. And the rest is history!

Based on this review of the restaurant, my husband and I went there for dinner last night. He had a beef burrito, and I had a chicken quesadilla. I told him about the review here and I had high hopes for a great meal. We were both disappointed. Our meals were bland and boring. There wasn’t much in the way of flavour or spices except in the hot salsa that came with our nachos. When I tried to order a daiquiri ,it was not available; our waitress did not suggest anything else, she just handed me the drink menu. Since I am not a big drink person, we just ended up with water. I found my quesadilla to have alot of cheese and very little chicken. My husband found his burrito had an awful lot of lettuce in it. Sadly we would not recommend this restaurant, nor would we go back to eat there again.
*Just a thought – if they knew or suspected they were being reviewed did you get the 4 star experience?*
